Most of us have Disney movies we’ve watched a hundred times and would watch a hundred times more. Who can resist the magic of true love? Decades later, our children still watch the original Snow White and Beauty and the Beast, and we happily join in.
This is what reading Jenni James’ Faerie Tale Collection felt like. Age old stories, told in a clean, romantic, fairy-tale style that would enchant even the smallest readers.
Of course there are twists, because they would be quite pointless if there weren’t, but key elements from original stories are incorporated like breadcrumbs throughout. Short and sweet, filled with insta-love and happily-ever-afters, these books are a nice way to spend a night cuddled under a blanket.
I only read three so far, as there is only so much romance I can take at once, but I may pick up more in the future.
Rumpelstiltskin: a completely different take, where he’s the protagonist!
Cinderella: pretty much stayed true to the original story, but more realistic.
Beauty and and Beast: an interesting version where the beast is a wolf instead of monster.
So if you want a dash of nostalgia with your fairy tales, these are the books for you. If you’re looking for complex characters and evolved relationships, these won’t satisfy.
